On Jan 3, 2012, AlertsUSA issued the following Flash Messages to subscribers:

January 3, 2012
Iran Army Chief Salehi threatens U.S.: "Iran will take action if a U.S. aircraft carrier which left the area because of Iranian naval exercises returns to the Gulf."

Some additional info:

  • A media account detailing Salehi's threats can be found here.
  • According to an Iranian FARS News Agency report, all foreign warships will soon be unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz unless they first receive a permission from the Iranian Navy ships deployed in the region. The Washington Post expands on the FARS article here.
  • A second Iranian official, the deputy chief of Iran's forces, Masoud Jazayeri, is quoted as saying that "The long-term presence of the United States in the region increases insecurity and the possibility of tensions and of confrontation.. and as a result ... the United States must leave the region. Regarding the departure of the Stennis from the Persian Gulf, he added, "Since you've gone, don't come back, otherwise you'll be responsible for any problems."
  • No Iranian official has given any indication of what steps would taken if the Stennis or any other carrier or warship approached the straits.
  • Threat Journal has previously reported on tension in this key waterway.

Hong Kong on H5N1 Avian Flu Alert
December 31, 2011

The juicy parts:

""Hong Kong is on heightened alert against the return of an avian flu outbreak after a [39 year old] man died just across the border in the first confirmed human case in China in 2011."

"The alert came just days after Hong Kong slaughtered thousands of chickens and banned the import of live poultry from the mainland after a dead chicken in a Kowloon market was found to have carried the virus."

"...two rival university research teams recently produced mutant strains of the virus which could be made more transmissible between humans."

"The World Health Organization said it was concerned about the “possible risks and misuses associated with this research” while a top advisory body to the US government last week urged academics and the world’s most prestigious scientific journals to withhold full details of the research."

What you need to know:

  • According to the WHO (not the band), the virus has appeared in more than a dozen countries since 2003, though the disease's impact thus far has been has been muted — 575 people infected, with 338 deaths — by its apparent inability to pass between humans. Scientists warn that mutations in the H5N1 strain of the disease could allow human-to-human spread and potentially cause a global pandemic.
  • The potential for mutations and strains more adept to easy transmission between humans is helped along by researchers who intentionally create such strains.

Dr. Ron Fouchier, PhD, of Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, as well as Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka, PhD, DVM of the University of Wisconsin, have both recently led research teams which created strains of H5N1 that spread among ferrets, the lab animal used in place of humans in flu studies. Flu bugs that spread among humans usually spread among ferrets.
  • In the Netherlands study, after only 10 “passages” in ferrets — that is, 10 rounds of infecting one ferret with the virus and then infecting another with the virus that grew in that ferret — the team ended up with an H5N1 bug that spread easily from ferret to ferret, all by itself.
  • Despite the fact that H5N1 is not easily able to pass from human to human, governments and international health organizations have been investing billions over the past several years preparing for an H5N1 pandemic. A particularly interesting article on this topic can be found on this blog.
