Hundreds of Synagogues Receive Bomb Threats
Jan 20, 2024
On January 17th, the following related Flash SMS
message was sent to AlertsUSA subscriber mobile devices:

1/17 - FBI reissues PSA warning of ongoing bomb threats targeting synagogues, schools, hospitals, airports, gov bldgs, and other public institutions. More via email.

What You Need To Know

On Wednesday afternoon, AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of the FBI's reissuing of a public service announcement warning of ongoing bomb threats by malicious actors targeting synagogues, Jewish community centers, schools, hospitals, airports, government buildings, and other public institutions in the United States. These actors threaten to detonate supposedly hidden explosives or commit violence against the recipients or their families.

According to the PSA, the FBI, DHS, and NCTC have not identified explosive devices or actual attempts to cause explosions at locations associated with these threats. However, every threat or incident of a suspected explosive device should be considered valid until all reasonable precautions have been taken.

Since December 8th, 2023, the FBI has opened investigations on more than 100 separate threats targeting more than 1,000 institutions in 42 states and the District of Columbia. Many of these messages contain similar wording and were sent using publicly available encrypted email tools. The threats originate from multiple IP addresses, which are likely obscured using tools such as Virtual Private Networks.

The largest category of threatened institutions, over 400, are synagogues or Jewish community centers, followed by schools or school districts, and hospitals or hospital networks.

To help mitigate potential threats, DHS has compiled a compendium of resources for communities and faith leaders to assist in securing mass gatherings and public spaces.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the overall domestic and international threat environment and will immediately notify service subscribers, via SMS messages and email, of breaking incidents of national significance, as well as any new alerts, warnings or advisories impacting the overall threat picture for American citizens, as events warrant.

Israel - Hamas War Update
Jan 20, 2024

What You Need To Know

Israel has destroyed around two thirds of Hamas' fighting regiments in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Thursday, vowing to continue the war until "complete victory" is achieved.

Netanyahu continues to reject calls from the United States to scale back Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip or take steps toward the establishment of a Palestinian state after the war.

Israeli defense officials are currently estimating the Hamas tunnel network beneath Gaza is between 350 and 450 miles in length, despite the territory only measuring 25 miles at it's longest point. One of the tunnels was large enough to drive a car through. Another measured hundreds of meters in length beneath a hospital.

Why U.S. Naval Power Needs Asian Allies

The United States faces a naval shipbuilding dilemma. On the one hand, China now has the world’s largest number of battle force ships, with over 370 platforms compared to 291 for the United States. China’s fleet is expected to grow to 435 ships by the end of this decade while the U.S. fleet will not change in size. China enjoys an asymmetric military advantage in the Western Pacific where most of its ships are concentrated, while the U.S. Navy is overstretched defending all of the world’s oceans.

Report to Congress on Great Power Competition

The emergence over the past decade of intensified U.S. competition with the PRC and the Russian Federation — often referred to as great power competition (GPC) or strategic competition — has profoundly changed the conversation about U.S. defense issues from what it was during the post–Cold War era.

The issue for Congress is how U.S. defense planning and budgeting should respond to GPC and whether to approve, reject, or modify the Biden Administration’s defense strategy and proposed funding levels, plans, and programs for addressing GPC. Congress’s decisions on these issues could have significant implications for U.S. defense capabilities and funding requirements and the U.S. defense industrial base.

War Is from Mars, AI Is from Venus

There is a fundamental paradox lurking in the hype about military AI. The political circumstances that are most conducive for automated prediction are in tension with the political circumstances that give rise to violent conflict. AI relies on large-scale data and stable collective judgments. But these same conditions are elusive in war.
