North Korea's Failed Satellite Launch Puts
Region on High Alert

June 3, 2023
On May 30th, the following related Flash SMS
message was sent to AlertsUSA subscriber mobile devices:

5/30 - Air raid sirens in Seoul as media report North Korea has launched its first spy satellite. Japanese gov warns Okinawa residents to seek shelter. Monitoring..

What You Need To Know

On Tuesday afternoon, AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of a North Korean rocket launch attempting to loft a satellite, which resulted in civil defense sirens blaring across in Seoul, South Korea, and triggering Japan's J-Alert warning system, urging people in Okinawa to "take shelter inside a building or underground immediately". That warning was issued around 6:30 am local time, which understandably rattled the population.

S. Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the launch of the newly developed Chollima-1 rocket carrying a surveillance satellite took place at the Sohae test facility on the North Korea's west coast. The rocket rose for a period before ultimately losing thrust following separation from the first stage and experiencing what SpaceX refers to as a "rapid unscheduled disassembly," ultimately crashing in the Yellow Sea a few hundred kilometers off the west coast of the peninsula.

North Korean state media confirmed the failure, saying its new rocket carrying a military reconnaissance satellite, “Malligyong-1”, fell into the sea due to the “abnormal starting of the second-stage engine”.

North Korea has previously announced the launch. Japan had ordered the Self-Defense Forces to be ready to shoot down any North Korean ballistic missile, rocket or debris that threatened Japanese territory. In preparation, the SDF sent PAC-3 ground-based missile-defense batteries to Okinawa's Miyako, Ishigaki and Yonaguni islands, while also deploying Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyers — which are equipped with SM-3 interceptors — to waters around Japan.

The United States denounced the launch via a statement from the White House National Security Council:

"The United States strongly condemns the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) for its launch using ballistic missile technology, which is a brazen violation of multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions, raises tensions, and risks destabilizing the security situation in the region and beyond."

Readers are reminded that the North has previously launched what it called a 'satellite-carrying rocket' five times -- one each in 1998, 2009, twice in 2012, and once in 2016. The North says two of those launches successfully placed satellites in orbit.

"I want to thank you for your service last night. I work weird hours at the Minneapolis Airport and left work at 11p last night. I heard sirens and decided to check my phone. You had texted at 10:58p about the riots. Knowing that I can trust AlertUSA's reporting, I made the decision to call my manager to inform him of your alert. We had many employees leaving for home and he thanked me for calling. Thank you once again for your service to our Country and the world."

Ukraine War Update+

June 3, 2023
What You Need To Know

According to the UK Ministry of Defence:

  • Russia has continued to redeploy regular units to the Bakhmut sector, as Wagner Group assault detachment complete their withdrawal to rear areas.
  • Russian VDV (airborne forces) have assumed an increasingly important role in Bakhmut: elements of the 76th and 106th divisions and two additional separate VDV brigades are now deployed to the sector.
  • The VDV is much degraded from its pre-invasion ‘elite’ status. However, Russian commanders have likely attempted to maintain some of these still relatively capable units as an uncommitted reserve. Because they have instead been forced to deploy them to hold the front line in Bakhmut, the whole Russian force is likely to be less flexible in reacting to operational challenges.

NATO Membership For Ukraine Is A Mistake

Ahead of next month’s annual NATO conference, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday, “I think we need to talk concrete and tangible security guarantees” for Ukraine following any end-of-war settlement. The time has now come for the West in general – and the U.S. in particular – to face a cold, hard, truth: lashing our future security guarantees to an unstable nation that has a perpetual antagonism to its nuclear-armed neighbor gambles with U.S. security and should be rejected out of hand.

Chinese Spy Balloons Are Hovering Over American Universities

Each year, the People’s Republic of China sends aloft thousands of spy balloons to hover over American universities. They are doing far more damage to our national security than the balloon we finally shot down. Yet America not only allows them to enter our airspace freely, but we actually encourage them to — in large part because they pay full tuition.

I am speaking, of course, about PRC nationals going to college on student visas. In the 2019/20 academic year, they numbered 372,532, more than one-third of the entire foreign student population. Because of COVID, the number dropped to 290,086 in 2021/22, still representing almost one-third of all foreign students.

How Non-Citizens Are Voting in American Elections

This month marks the 30th anniversary of President Bill Clinton signing the National Voter Registration Act into law. You probably know the law as "Motor Voter." It is the federal requirement that requires state motor vehicle offices to offer voter registration and the ability to update your address.

Sounds convenient? Now, we have data showing one of the side effects of Motor Voter is to put non-citizens onto American voter rolls.
