Poland Sends 10,000 Troops to Belarus Border

August 12, 2023

What You Need To Know

Poland announced this week they are sending 10,000 soldiers to their border frontier with Belarus. According to Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik, Warsaw is deploying thousands of additional troops to combat illegal crossings and "maintain cross-border stability."

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak was little more plain-spoken, saying the move was intended to 'scare the aggressor so that he does not dare attack us.'

As we reported last week, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia have dramatically increased their security posture in response to the presence of thousands of Wagner PMC forces in Belarus following their failed Russian coup attempt in June. Although their presence in Belarus is publicly stated to be for the purpose of training local forces, some of that training, as well as newly launched Belarusian war games, are taking place directly adjacent to the Polish border.

In recent days, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko publicly cautioned that he is constantly restraining the Wagner fighters who intend to stage attacks in Poland. Readers are reminded that last Tuesday, Poland tracked two Belarusian helicopters as they breached Polish airspace and flew several miles at low altitude before returning back over the border. There are also images appearing on social media showing gloved hands holding Wagner PMC Group patches up against different landmarks found in the Suwalki Gap area of northern Poland, as well as Wagner recruiting stickers appearing across Warsaw.

Also on Wednesday, Russia announced they are repositioning forces closer to the border of Poland and Finland as a result of Poland's movement of troops and the addition of Finland to the defense alliance.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the situation around the clock and will immediately notify service subscribers of any developments which signal a change the overall threat picture for American citizens as events warrant.

Ukraine War Update

August 12, 2023

What You Need To Know

According to the Institute for the Study of War:

Ukrainian forces have made tactically significant advances in western Zaporizhzhia Oblast amid continued counteroffensive operations on at least three sectors of the front on August 11.

Ukrainian counteroffensive operations appear to be forcing the Russian military to laterally redeploy Russian forces defending in western Zaporizhzhia Oblast, indicating that the Ukrainian effort there may be significantly degrading Russian defenses.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence:

Russia has likely redeployed airborne forces’ (VDV) units from the Kherson region to the heavily contested Orikiv sector in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The 58th Combined Arms Army (58 CAA) has been in combat facing Ukrainian assaults since 4 June 2023.

Reports suggest that the 70th and 71st Motor Rifle Regiments have faced particularly intense attrition and heavy combat on the front line. There is a realistic possibility that the arrival of VDV will finally allow elements of these regiments to be pulled out for rest and recovery.

However, the redeployment will likely leave Russia’s defenses near the east bank of the Dnipro River weaker, where they are increasingly harassed by Ukrainian amphibious raids.

Border Migrants Have a Right to Apply for Asylum, But...

Aliens at the Southwest border and ports have an almost absolute right to apply for asylum, but under the section 235 inspection protocol Congress has established, they must be detained while that application process plays out.

[But in] FY 2022, just 9.6 percent of all aliens apprehended entering the United States illegally were subject to expedited removal, which would have allowed CBP to quickly remove them if they did not have credible fear claims. By contrast, CBP simply released more than 689,000 — nearly 60 percent — of the illegal migrants apprehended by Border Patrol at the U.S.-Mexico line that year.

2023 National Intelligence Strategy For The Intelligence Community

The six goals outlined in this NIS reflect key elements of the current strategic environment: the centrality of strategic competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Russian Federation; the growing importance of emerging technologies, supply chains, and economic statecraft to national security; the increasing influence of sub-national and non-state actors; and the challenges stemming from the convergence of shared global challenges, such as climate change and health security.

The NIS is a foundational document for the IC and reflects the input of leaders from each of the 18 intelligence elements, as it directs the operations, investments, and priorities of the collective.
